Artist Statement

I base most of my art on the inspiration of music. Music is with me all the time. Music has a healing power for me. It is part of life to have hard moments, times of sadness, and there is beauty in those hard times and that sadness. We always look for something that would make us find soothing answers to unexplainable questions. Music also rejuvenates, gives strength and gives new ideas. Music is touching. It soars your imagination and transfers you to another world. It is as though you are reborn. Music is power for your soul. Musical instruments are our souls. They live because we play them. They have life because of the people that touch them.

The life of the musical instrument begins with a luthier. It begins with his/her story, their experience, their hard work, their quality, their artisanship. People give them souls. The instruments are associated with that human, and they have their own story. Because they might be passed from one musician to another, change their place of living, because of the luthier who made them or how he/she made them, the soul of each instrument grows and changes throughout the years. While playing musicians pour their souls into their instrument. The more you play a violin, the better resonance or sound it has. The instrument becomes alive.

My passion for classical music makes me dream about violins. When I draw them, I rediscover their magic. I love every little detail of them, I like their color, their sound, and the different feelings that they invoke each time when I hear them. They say the violin’s voice is closest to the human voice. For me, every instrument has a character and a soul like a human being. I love showing them in a new way, recreating them through the depth of my feelings. The portraits of the instruments that I make are important for me because they embody my thoughts and emotions. They become an allegory of one’s own imagery, bringing a unique and unprecedented beauty. I have loved the violin since I was a child, but I did not have an opportunity to play. I played the piano instead. Later, I discovered that is never too late to start learning a new instrument.

I continue to have my admiration for the strings and their mysticism. The purity of the sound has a healing effect on us just like when you see a painting with good harmony of colors or a drawing with fine lines. I like working with different materials, charcoals, pencils, pastels, oils. I love especially the simplicity and freedom that charcoal and pastel give, and at the same time, I enjoy the painterly approach that they allow. I like having a sketchbook always to hand, and make sketches whenever I can. I like this quick process because it synthesizes my ideas, and gives me the opportunity to discover the details that are important to me. My love for violins turns into one exploration about the instrument. The voice of the violin is always in my heart. I draw and paint with all my heart.
